LiquidMonkLPItunes(1).jpgLiquid Monk release their debut album, the first major body of work from one of the premiere groups coming out of the Detroit scene right now. Synonymous with instrumental prowess, genre bending creativity and charismatic live performances, the eponymous LP draws upon their abilities to mesh an array of live instrumentation alongside electronics, redefining how organic and electronic elements can combine to bring the excitement of a live band along with the texture and groove of a producer or DJ. The long-play mixtape opens with a Bossa Nova / Synth-Funk hybrid titled “Hollywood” is definitely the stand out track. The rest of EP continues the theme of 80’s synth sounds fused with various genres. Fan favorites like “Nighttime” ft. Kameryn Ogden add a touch of familiarity to the collection.
The jazz influenced tracks like “Daylight Savings” and “The Vibe” ft. Hugo Biggs add a much needed sultry element to the plethora of tracks. For an album with no pop tracks or gimmicks, this record gets the Chant stamp of approval. Compulsive and full of style, Liquid Monk‘s debut album is a tight, controlled and simultaneously freewheeling first offering, a thoughtful and sophisticated body of work that lays the foundations to what is sure to be more experimentation and tasteful collaborations.
