GV - Hold On.jpg“Hugely talented.” BBC 6 Music

The cult of Gizmo Varillas continues to grow with UK and US tastemakers including George Ezra (who has included Gizmo on own Spotify playlists), BBC 6 Music, BBC London and KRCW coming across and championing an artist they see as a major new talent. Racking up critical acclaim across Daytrotter, CLASH Magazine, Indie Shuffle and Uncut amongst others, supporting Jack Savoretti on his European tour as well as his own sold-out show at Ronnie Scott’s, Gizmo consolidated one of the breakthroughs of the year with last month’s official Yoko Ono-approved new track ‘No War’ adding to his debut festival appearances at Montreaux Jazz Festival and Cornbury Festival. Now the fifth release from Gizmo Varillas ‘Hold On’, follows on from the release of his debut album ‘El Dorado’ and continues to define Gizmo as one of the finest and most inventive young troubadours of the year. His indomitable good spirit and honest call to arms about the search for love can’t help but drive a much-missed and precious good feeling that has become a mainstay of the Spanish-born Londoner’s ever-widening appeal.
The twenty-something’s unique combination of folk tinged with south American Tropicalia continues to conjure comparisons to the ultra-catchiness of Paul Simon, and his ethereal harmonies and melodies to the likes of Fleet Foxes. All the while Gizmo stamps his subtle Latin influence across all of it. An intoxicating sound as timeless as it is genuinely engrossing – Gizmo has played every instrument, arranged and produced every record he’s released. Now ‘Hold On’ continues to mark Gizmo as a cult gem of a star ascending.
